Portfolio Assignment 6

How I could describe my feelings and thoughts towards educational technology before and after this course? Honestly, I really didn’t have any major thoughts about educational technology before this course. I came to these minor studies because many people recommended it as practical and really rich subject. My idea of educational technology mainly was about what I’d seen before: PowerPoint presentations made by teachers and students, Word documents, Internet and different databases as references and full of information. We really haven’t used any technological tools besides computers and projectors on any of my classes. I guess many teachers are still traditional that way. In intro course this definetly changed. Although we made mindmaps in a traditional way with pen and paper, we also got know how to use tablets to create mind maps and share them with our class wireless. We have gotten to know of many tools in ICT workshops also. You can definetly say that my view on educational technology is wider now and I like it. It’s good to see how teachers are trained to get more hands on with technology and learn more how to make the best of it in teaching. It’s good that nowadays people see it more as gift then as a threat. Maybe before there was a tiny thought in my head that people who use educational technology will eventually replace traditional teaching methods with all sorts of technology. Is that the case? I really don’t believe so as it’s pretty clear that they can be used easily together and that way also could find the best of both worlds and use them. Of course use of technology brings up it’s own challenges to cope, but what approach are tool doesnt?

What about learning then? Well, this autumn has been great to reflect on the concept of learning, since alongside this course I’ve also had a course on psychology of learning in my major studies. I’ve always thought that learning as a concept is pretty hard to summarize with few words. It really has a lot of theories and meanings behind it. And what do I think now? I think that it is even harder if that’s possible, because in this course I’ve found new perspectives to see learning based on our various methods in this course for example. I have gotten to know learning theories during this course by main points and maybe all of them are better organized in my head but at the same time the connections between different concepts are getting more complicated as you can see that everything really can relate on pretty much anything. Below you can now see our groups two mind maps about learning:

12180052_10208305518140463_415654610_nIn my first blog post about learning, I said that learning is a personal thing in a way. Some people learn by reading themselves and some people learn better by discussing and doing groupwork. I still believe that learning really is something that has no right or wrong method and each of us have our own styles to learn best. But for me personally, I have maybe understood the role of your own understanding in the process of learning. We all have our own ways to read and build images, knowledge and opinions in our heads. But really after discussing with your views with some people you can share opinions and then build a understanding together. I really haven’t thought about this before this autumn and now I understand how important that has been for me personally also and how that has developed my own learning without me even further noticing. When comparing these mindmaps you can clearly see the role of our Jigsaw sessions also. Throughout these sessions we have found new key points to learning which we maybe didn’t notice in the first mindmap. Our new mindmap is more organized in a way I think. Because before in our previous mind maps we were as a group saying and pointing out a lot of terms but we really didn’t know that much connections between them as we did in the later mind map.

Intro course offered a lot of working methods in a short time. In a way it’s a good thing because it gives a wide perspective to educational technology and learning also. I think that for me collaborative working sessions and jigsaw method really taught the role of discussion in learning. When you discuss with the expert teams you change your points of views and get good thoughts about the subject and in your home teams you know better what really are the main points of your article. And the best part in the home teams working was also the fact that when the articles were so close to each other it really brought up a lot of good questions and maybe it also helped you to understand your own article better also. Every week the summarizing of the four articles in to mind maps were good for learning, because they also had an affect on our final mind map of learning. ICT workshops like I said before, helped me to find many different tools that I really didn’t know that excisted. They also we’re pretty laid back, you really got to choose what you want to learn and how high you want to set your goals. That way every student can make those decisions based on their motivation and previous knowledge. Pecha Kucha taught me, that you really don’t need a lot of time to make your point. 20 seconds per slide is enough. And they are short, simple and effective because I can still remember many things about educational technology in many countries. Mostly about the course methods I have to say, I like how they all came together as one in the end. The mind map we made at first evolved during our collaborative working sessions and jigsaws. Also it was nice to see links there with the videolectures as well since Paul Kirschner had his word in both of these. The themes in lectures and the articles we’re also easy to combine and make connections. So some parts yes, I do think differently about learning after oll of these methods but some thoughts they have only made stronger. I can really say that if it is possible to use this many teaching methods in a course, people really should do that. It takes of course time to prepare and design but as you see the result, isn’t it worth it? This way people really get to see what is their way to learn for themselves. In a way any method can’t really be affective without persons own motivation and goals.

Last but not least, collaboration. I think collaborative learning had a big role in these course so I can see that it had an effect on my learning. Like I have said before the part of discussion and building our understanding together is something I value now much more. You can get so much more out of everything with interaction. I think that our roles, mine and other students, in the learning process were pretty similar. At least I have a thought that after discussing with the expert teams and sharing your meanings for the articles helped me somehow understand better and maybe trusting my own findings more. Together in our home teams, based on our articles, we really could build big pictures of things like personal learning enviroments and direct instructional guidance and so on. I’ve enjoyed collaborative work in this course because I think there is not as much of collaboration in my studies as there could and maybe should be.

I have now summarized shortly my thoughts of learning and teaching methods on this intro course and also reflected on the concepts of educational technology and learning. Maybe the concept of learning is never going to be clear and answered only one word or theory and that is good thing in my opinion. The concept has so many levels at this point and it can only grow them more in my head.

ICT Workshop III: Digital materials

On the last part of my ICT workshop practices I got to know TinkerCad, where you can design and create 3D designs which you can also print. I thought it was really cool because I haven’t really tried 3D design or even seen anything printed in 3D. At least I can’t really remember now. With TinkerCad, I watched the tutorials first and the tried to do my own creation and 3D designs. Really didn’t get anything good enough to print, but maybe someday 😀

With Canva I designed my own Instagram photo with a quote. Honestly, I could have spent many many hours with this one, I like to just fool around with fonts and designs and try to make something nice looking of them. This time, I used Canva with a quote of one of my alltime favourite movies, which I really think is a good advice to life also 🙂 You can see my design below:

SieppaaFor capturing this Canvas, I used this time computers own snipping tool. Snipping tool indeed is a good way to take screencaptures and I really used it a lot in one quantitative course, when it was needed to report graphics and stuff like that so I’ve used snipping tool before. Maybe more I use Iphones own camera to capture screenshots these days.

I also used Screencaptive for making a short video. I really didin’t know you could do that also on your own computer for free! This including many others are great digital teaching tools! Screencaptive I think is a great way to create many tutorials and with Youtube for example you can create great teaching videos! Below you can also see now ”not-so-great-I’m-still-learning”- video 😀

Finally something I know a bit better than Screencaptive. I have made QR Codes sometimes on my previous ICT courses also. I have always used creators I find from the Internet. In this case, I’ve made a code out of my Pecha Kucha presentation. The code opens the presentation to SlideShare and I had to download the application for my phone at first for this to open.

I think during these ICT workshops I’ve gotten to know of various new tools and materials betters. Some of these tools and services I knew before, but some were totally new for me and I was really suprised of how many tools we have available already! Looking forward for trying to use them better in my studies and someday maybe at working field also. I have to say that some of these things are really cool and probably they can create many rich learning and teaching tools.

ICT Workshop II: Social Networks

You can really find many useful things from Internet and also find great tutorials and inspiration. For me, Pinterest is a source like that. From Pinterest you can find probably everything you want to know and use maybe depending on what you are interested in. I personally use Pinterest for example to find recepies and good tips for them and styling tips for home like Ikea Hacks (how you can improve anything you have bought there like this.) Main use for Pinterest for me is hairstyles and tutorials for simple and nice-looking hairstyles and braids. You can see my board of hairstyles I want to learn or have tried to learn so far. Thanks to pinterest I have learned how to braid my hair 😀

I haven’t used Youtube for creating playlists for a long time but this time I decided to do a playlist just about my favourite songs at the moment. The list is named after this current season, Autumn leaves, and you can see the list here:

At the moment, I think that Instagram is my mostly used social network. I’ve had account for about two years now. I post usually at least one photo per week but usually more. I also like to search for places and persons in Instagram. For example if I’m going on a vacation abroad, I usually make a wide search of pictures using hashtags and places. You can always find my newest Instagram post here in my blog since I installed it as a widget on my blog.

In Facebook I have joint to Intro- group created for these studies. I have also joint on a professional group in my field, which is Educational Psychologists in Finland. It was a really good find, because our field for occupation opportunities is so wide that is nice to find a professional froups which share important knowledge for us. There is also information for seminars and meetings. I don’t update my Facebook so much as I used to before but I try to write and upload stuff there every now and then. For example yesterday I posted a picture from my autumn break which I spent at home.

Now I have also account on Twitter. Twitter I think is a great way to be a part on live discussion on television for example. I’ve never really used Twitter myself, but maybe now it’s my time to learn. Here you can see my first Tweet:

It is really good to see, how social networks are coming more and more useful in teaching. When it is used carefully and right, it can offer lot of new ways to learn. It also gives a lot of challenges, which I’m not going to discuss more now. Social networks gives us great opportunities to share our knowledge and opinions and it also gives great ways to discuss and change points of views.

ICT-workshop I: Essential tools

First thing I’ve done for this intro courses ICT workshop, was naturally the creation of this very blog. During this course I have learned to use WordPress and this blog in various ways. In most of my posts I have added different tags and categories. Also after founding my blog I really have tried to visualize it somehow like changing themes and adding my own photo as the cover photo. I have also added there media like pictures from our collaborative working sessions and I’ve also used Slideshare to help me upload my Pecha Kucha presentation here also. Now I also have learned how to embed Youtube videos also, as you can see from below.

During this course different cloud services like Google Apps and O365 were also introduced. Both of these cloud services are familiar to me and I’ve used both of them a lot on my studies before. From Google maybe the most used thing for me is Google Docs. I have the app also in my Iphone. It has made group works easier and for example during a methodology course with a few Russian students it made the writing of our final report a bit easier. In this course I’ve used also Google Presentation, where I made a presentation of my hometown Pello. O365 is maybe used more here in the university. I have a student e-mail account there and tools like Online Word and Powerpoint have been used a lot. Both cloud services have also qualities like Google Drive and OneDrive, which both are good ways to keep my documents saved and I can also edit them wherever I want. I have had O365 app in my phone for the same time we’ve had our student e-mail accounts there. That’s how I always keep on track of new e-mails and can also read them when I want and where I want.

In the collaborative working sessions we have used Ipads to help us create a Popplet mindmap for summarizing our Jigsaw discussions. An example of our groups Popplet can be seen here. Sadly the Popplets quality in that post isn’t the best possible, but idea of using it has come clear to me. We also used the technology in L2 to present one of our groups Popplet presentations with wireless screen mirroring. We showed the presentation to the whole lecture hall and for that we used AirPlay. That was pretty cool and I wasn’t  really aware that you could present your own files from a tablet without using the ”teachers computer” in front of the class. I also tried Draw.IO once to see how mindmap is created with that and I can say that it was simple tool to use as well.

Collaborative working session: Jigsaw 4

Finally had the time and energy to upload our final jigsaw sessions result. Saving the best for last indeed 🙂 The discussiom we had was mainly about direct instructional guidance and what amount of it is proper. Our key point was shortly that you can’t really pour all knowledge on students and you can’t also wait them to know and find everything themselves. You have to find the golden mean, which we have described in the middle.

Enjoy the rest of the autumn break 🙂

Collaborative working session: Jigsaw 3

Our third Jigsaw session and discussion was about Personal Learning Environments (PLE). Overall we had a conclusion how everything we discussed about was involved with everything in the PLE’s. Under you can see our great old-fashioned mindmap about the subject.

Portfolio Assignment 3

We did a presentation about the use of educational technology in my partner Ercan’s nation, Turkey. In Turkey the use of technology is also various and it can depend on many things. For example economy is a big factor and some public and private schools can have very different kind of gadgets to offer. Some public schools can also be at a stage where they don’t have a computer classroom at their school. In that case the use of computers is basically learned by monitoring teachers. Maybe the most common technology used is computers, projectors and smart boards. Mainly the technology is used to improve learning. This has been done with different kinds of presentations and computer games for example.

Basically Turkish school system offers a ICT class in 5th grade, which is the 1st year of secondary school. They learn computer and internet terms and language and something about ethics which is needed with computers especially with Internet. Strategies and development for educational technology were basically to keep up with the current trends. Turkey is not a leading country with educational technology, but they try their best to follow what is going on.

Maybe the most new and interesting thing for me was the operating system Pardus which was created by Turkish programmers. It was interesting to hear how in Turkey some people can be very technology-oriented and interested of programming and creating with technology.

Here is also our PowerPoint presentation of the subject

Portfolio assignment 2

I watched Paul Kirschner’s lecture, which was about high quality learning.  Lecture was really interesting and it raised a lot of thoughts. Another video lecture I watched was Essi Vuopala’s lecture in which she introduces innovating pedagogy. In this assignment I also reference to Hanna Järvenoja’s lecture, which she gave us about two weeks ago and it was about technology-enhanced learning

For me the most important and interesting things in these three lectures were

1. Situation is important.
Kirschner’s lecture offered the term high quality learning, which shortly means a situation where learning happens with the good use of three different affordances and aspects, which are techniques, tools and ingredients. It also has thee goals, which are effectiveness, enjoyability and efficiency. For me I think you need also some situational knowledge with using these affordances and aspects. For example like Kirschner said, you can’t cook right if you don’t have the knowledge of how to use oven or something else. In learning situation you have to know your learner and take in to account the level of students attitude or knowledge. Then it’s possible to create an environment which can lead to high quality learning.

2. Collaboration and interaction.
Kirchner said something like this: ”Learning is always a social thing.” I think collaborative learning is a big trend in learning techniques at the moment. With interaction and getting to know other people you can achieve mutual understanding of some issues.  Also according to Järvenoja, 21st century learning requires also motivational competence and effective learning in individual and collaborative work in formal and informal learning settings. Collaboration and collaborative learning can offer discussion, argumentation, different questions and new points of views and definitions.

3. Technology is a tool, but not a solution.
Especially in Järvenoja’s lecture it came pretty clear, that technology, when it is used right, can increase learning in various ways. The teacher must be ready also for technology. The right use of aspects and tools like technology needs also the knowlege of how to use them. Without the knowledge you can’t use it properly and that can lead less learning for students. When used properly, technology can offer a lot for learning process. Like Vuopala said in her lecture, traditional learning methods are most likely not going anywhere but they can be improved with modern ideas.

4. Skills and knowledge can change but the main idea does not.
In the end of Kirschner’s lecture was a discussion about skills and competence. I think that the points Kirschner made were really good and I wanted to also include this part to my list. The example of doctor’s 25 years ago and today showed us that the techniques, knowedge and skills they can use and they need can be different, but the main idea of what they do, help people with medical issues, hasn’t changed. For me that somehow is easily compared to learning. Although learning is a thing, where the ”basic skills” doesn’t change that radically there can also come tools like technology and internet, which adds a list of new skills we have to handle, like for example how to use Internet for information searching and how to find infromation you can trust.

5. Gaming and learning
In Vuopala’s lecture it was told that gaming and learning have a lot of similarities and because of that gaming should be used somehow for learning purposes. Both gaming and learning can get a flow state on for a person and inner motivation is also common. In games and in learning you have your own goals you want to achieve and you also develop strategies for achieving them. Also the term gamification is introduced and it was told that the role of it can be a lot bigger in ten years.
